Chairs have been a constant theme in my work.
Lines
After about a month, I've finally worked on this project again. I ditched the Bryce tree for a post production one. I added in the circular windows on the sides and the striped stone work in the front.

Shadows
Version 5 of my Awning project. The shadows, lighting and tree were done in photoshop. Some modeling done in Ray Dream. Some textures done in Photoshop. Everything else is Bryce.

|

Still Life 2
I did some post processing in Photoshop to fake a depth of field focal blur.
May 2001
|
Interior Blue
Everything in this picture was created in Bryce 5 for the beta testing. The bed was the toughest part, especially the spread which is made of hundreds of metaballs. I learned in the process that metaballs render a few points beyond where their wireframes end. I guess this is part of how their "stickiness" work but it makes working with them difficult when non metaball objects are involved.
July 2001
|
Antique Fireplace
I took most of the month to build and light this piece. By the time I was done I had learned a great deal but I was also throughly sick of the project!
August 2001 |
Four Chairs
Four Chairs was a test render for a larger project. At the time I was working on complex, "full room" type scenes which involved modeling objects over the course of many days. I've since switched more to concentrating on doing a good job on modeling one object and then reusing the others that I have on hand. Then I slowly build up a library of interchangeable objects.

The
Alcove
Here was my first render from the Alcove project. I had drawn Red
Fruit in Painter. The curtains
were Carrara creations.
October 2001
|
The Alcove Final
Here is the final render from the alcove project.
October 2001 |
The Alcove Detail
I used DOF to bring in the focus on the love seat under the fruit painting.
October 2001 |
Waiting for News
It's another cheesy Bryce/Painter/Poser piece. While it's not great, it did serve it's purpose as a storyboard for a project I've been working for just about forever. So it has sentimental value.
October 2001 |
Halloween Kitchen
I think this was another of the Ray Dream / Carrara Challenges that the 3DCommune used to run.
October 2001 |
Three Tiered Dish Challenge
Here is a poser render of the candy dish.
November 2001 |
Oasis
Here is the Bryce project that inspired the Illustrator drawing.
January, 2002 |
Snowman Family
I made this snowman family in Bryce after had our first successful ultrasound.
January, 2002
|
Deja Vu (or Three Flying Carpets on Autopilot)
Another of the Project Imagination themes on the binary news group inspired this piece, as did the "deja vu" of being pregnant again. Except this time it looked like things would really work (which they did).
January, 2002
|
Kathy's Place
I was beta testing the A Frame house for the 3DCommune Store and it reminded me so much of a place I used to stay with my parents in Idyllwild that I decided to recreate the spot from memory in Bryce.

Bisbee
My grandfather grew up in Bisbee. While I've not been to his home town, I have been to other towns like it in Arizona. There are often these abanonded homes on the fringes of these desert towns.

April 2004
|
Conversation Room
Here is the first render of the conversation project.

|
Asian-Californian Fusion
Sometimes I like to model and render food scenes. This render is one of my favorites of the set.
April 2004

I built this bike for a Carrara forum challenge.
May 2002
|
Cat Mask
This was an attempt to model a copy of a mask I had hand painted in real life and had hanging on my living room wall.
May 2002

Waiting
There is Sean's owl again. The circle on the calendar was his original due date. He decided to wait until the 20th.
June 2002
|

Group of Chairs
I drew the plaid textures for these chairs by hand with crayon and Pentel pen.
July 2002 |

Fisher Island Room
I drew the carpet pattern by hand with Pentel pen. The Fisher Island Room project was my last complex project. My time at night is now too limited because of Sean (and I wouldn't have it any other way).
July 2002 |

Fisher Island Tea Party
Here is the completed Fisher Island room.
August 2002 |

Bear with Attitude
Priscilla isn't usually this grumpy.
August 2002 |

Solarium
Ooh. Naked men on the walls!
August 2002 |

Nina's Room
Trying to get back into Bryce after Sean.
August 2002 |

Rocking Chair Winner
Vaguely inspired by D.H. Lawrence's story "Rocking Horse Winner."
September 2002 |

Monday
I think I must have rendered this on a Monday.
September 2002 |

Up Town Tropical
I started making my own rooms based on design elements I had on hand rather than trying to build complete spaces over the course of a month.
September 2002 |

Color Blind
Playing with color and shade.
September 2002 |

Evening Has Come to Pass
I made the models in Carrara but I rendered in Bryce. The title is inspired by a Moody Blues song.

The palm tree lamps were my latest creation. I rendered this picture in Bryce.
November 2002 |

This was a test render for the apple model.
November 2002 |

This piece started as a test render for the chair that is in shadow.
January 2003 |

Modern Art
I was playing with the vertex editor in Carrara to try to learn more about how it works.
January 2003 |

The Parlor
The chest of the drawers was my newest model.
January 2003 |

I wanted to see if I could do a champagne bottle in Carrara. This picture is rendered in Bryce.
January 2003 |

Five to Nine
I was trying to capture the feel of a small mountian cabin.
January 2003 |

The Sun Room
I chose to sepia tone the interior to bring out the colors of the garden outside.
February 2003 |

The Colonel's Retirment
The chair was new for this project
February 2003 |

The Lobby
This room could be part of hotel.
February 2003 |

Red and White
The wine spill is done with a metaball grouping.
February 2003 |

Last Year
Inspired by the film Last Year at Marienbad.
February 2003 |

The Bog Baby
The title comes from when Ian and I were doing a low impact hike when I was still pregnant with Sean. We were taking the Bog Trail at the time when I started getting some really bad Braxton Hicks contractions and Ian joked that he didn't want our son to be born in the bog.
March 2003 |

New Jersey Living Room
I used a MojoWorld render of Neopolitan for the multicanvas painting in this piece.
March 2003 |

Meditation on a Yellow Fan
The rock on the table is my way of bringing the zen garden inside.
March 2003 |

Molly's Cabin
I don't remember why I named this Molly.
March 2003 |

Barstow
I was mostly playing with previously created items.
March 2003 |

Spring Break
I turned the Hammershoi model into a cheesy 1960s redecorated motel.
March 2003 |

A Quiet Morning
I had done the carpet in Illustrator. This is another view of the atrium.
March 2003 |

Artifacts of Life
The square table was my latest model. It has become a favorite of mine.
April 2003 |

The Gardener's Work Bench
I built the watering can as an excuse to play with Bryce trees again.
April 2003 |

Mice and Spoons
This couch must be a doll's couch given how large the mice toys and spoons are. Oops!
April 2003 |

The Parlor
These mice are better sized. I think I was mostly reusing objects for this piece.
April 2003 |

Black and White
I made the table cloth with the vertex editor. It was another huge step forward in my understanding on that piece of Carrara.
May 2003 |

Coffee
Dedicated to all those people who have to pull late nighters or who work the grave yard shift.
May 2003 |

Cleaning Up
I was practicing with Poser, a program I don't use much. The mucky water is done with metaballs.
May 2003 |

The Crown Prince Ball Room
No she's not cleaning the entire floor with just a bucket and a sponge. It's just one tough spot.
May 2003 |

A Boy's Bedroom
Inspired by my brother's old bedroom.
May 2003 |

Long Island History
I love this room. All the pieces in it are my Carrara and Bryce creations.
May 2003 |

Athens, Georgia
The lamp was the newest creation.
May 2003 |

Reflections on a Day's Work
The blue light was my latest creation in Carrara. I like the muted colors of this piece.
June 2003 |

Uno, Dos, Tres
The room is based on our old Pacifica Apartment but the furniture and artwork is much nicer than anything we own.
June 2003
|

The Two Bears
I created another teddy bear in Carrara. I used UV Mapper to create a texture map for the new bear.
June 2003
|

Blue Room
Rendered in Bryce
August 2003 |

Lead Me Not into Temptation
I was testing out the new chairs.
October 2003 |

It's the same room that I use for James's office.
October 2003 |

Living with Lemons
I was reading Driving Over Lemons at the Time.
February 2004 |

Early Morning Coffee
I created the blue folding chair in Carrara for this piece. The ivy is a Bryce tree with the trunk and branches set to transparent and new branches draw in with Photoshop.
March 2004 |

The Waiting Room on a New Moon
I was playing with creating differently shaped interiors.
March 2004 |

Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?
Inspired by the song of the same name.
April 2004 |

Be Seeing You Cowboy...
It reminds me of the lounge area on the Bebop. Well maybe after they've gotte a few extra thousand woolongs.
April 2004 |

Estate Sale Finds
The cabinet was my newest creation.
April 2004 |

Brownstone Courtyard
Here is a Bryce version of the courtyard. I never finished this piece.
May 2004 |

Dust Bowl
The wheet is made of Bryce trees.
May 2004 |

Lupin in the Afternoon
The lupins are made with Bryce trees and custom leaves for the flower bits. They are one of my most successful ventures in the tree editor.
June 2004 |

Under the Manzanita
I used photographic pieces of a couple manzanitas to make these shrubs but the shapes aren't at all manzanita like. Nonetheless the resulting bushes are still nice looking.
June 2004 |

Moving Time
I created these Boolean boxes in Bryce just before packing up my computer for the move from Pacifica to Hayward.
July 2004 |

Vinnie's Pool
Created in Bryce with Booleans for use as a story board.
October 2004 |

The Pink Chair
This image starts my exploration in details, focusing on the little things, like this throw over the edge of the chair.
December 2004 |

Our Couch
I know it would be easier to just take photographs of our townhouse but I'm having more fun building them in Bryce. The couch is all Bryce, being a combination of symetrical lattices and booleaned primitives. All the textures are DTE creations.
Created February 3, 2005
|

Amanda's Couch
I put this rather simple interior together last night while watching NCIS and the season premiere of The Amazing Race. The scene is inspired by an Artedeco advertisement in an older issue of Florida Design. I reused the couch I built for the interior renders of my own living room but I changed the texture and added some throw pillows. Negative lighting provides the contrast under the stairs.
Created March 1-2, 2005
|

Amanda's Patio
Last night while watching Smallville and later CSI: New York, I built these director's chairs with boolean operations. The canvas bits are terrains. I obviously reused a lot of the elements from the previous project.
Created March 2-3, 2005
|

Light Reading
The amphora lamp is my latest boolean building project. I finally gave in an imported one of my earlier models (the table) to use in this project as the lamp had taken my entire alloted time for playing in Bryce.
Created March 7, 2005
|

At Home in Mississauga
I was looking at an advertisment for kitchen cabinets when I was inspired to create a dresser. Like my previous projects the dresser uses boolean operations. Mississauga is in Canada (near Ontario) and the kitchen designer is based there. It seemed like a good name for this image even though it shares very little with the ad that inspired it.
Created March 8, 2005
|

Jordon's Room
I built the chair with booleans and terrains but I didn't like the initial two renders I did on Wednesday. Last night I opted for moodier lighting and I like the results.
Created March 9-10, 2005
|

On Location in Big Sur
I made the little folding table to go with the director's chair. The two pieces just called for an outdoor setting. The mountain in the background is the Big Sur DEM that comes with Bryce.
Created March 12-13, 2005
|

Primary Colors
I'm still playing with vertex editing and having fun making all sorts of odd shapes. I thought a bold color scheme would fit these shapes better than earthy tones like I used in the previous image.
Created March 15, 2005
|

The Red & The Black Inn
I started with a floor texture from the Photoshop tiling project. Of course in the final render, the floor texture doesn't show well, but it was the inspiration for this piece.
Created April 8-12, 2005
|

Afternoon Champagne
I did a second render from the Red and Black Inn to highlight the background details.
Created April 15-17, 2005
|

Closing Time
The barstools are one of my latest creations. The bar is a simple boolean operation. I probably should have put more detrious on the bar to give it a more realistic end of the night feel but it it was bedtime. Let's just pretend that the place is almost cleaned up for the night.
Created April 28, 2005
|

The Reading Room
The bookcases are my latest model and they are based on a bookcase offered by Ikea. The light through the windows happened by accident but it was so lovely that I left it. I used a few more globe lights to enhance the effect and went even further in Photoshop by adjusting the contrast. Some folks have asked me where all the books are. Let's just say that the absent reader is busy unpacking boxes of books.
Created April 29, 2005
|

Lulu's
We were watching The Caveman's Valentine while I was working on this piece. I had put together yet another barstool. The Caveman's daughter is named Lulu.
Created April 30, 2005
|

Las Sillas de Abuelita
This piece was Inspired by some brightly painted chairs my grandmother used to have. I currently have her red chair.
Created May 13-5, 2005
|

Home Office
I didn't set out to make a home office as one can see from the lack of anything remotely officy in this render. But when I was done with the render I couldn't help but be reminded of a bunch of different home offices I've seen in my life time. The home office seems to be the place in the house where old or mismatched furniturer is put to pasture.
Created May 18, 2005 |

Lying on the Floor
I created the blue ceiling lamps in Carrara and put this Bryce render together to test them out.
Created May 20, 2005 |

Bird's Eye View
A week before creating this image, I had a dream that I was either in a fine arts class or I was working for a grpahic design company. I had two images I was working on for a deadline and one of the two was a top down view of a forest clearing. This render is inspiried by the dream image but it doesn't bear much actual resemblance to what I was creating in the dream.
Created May 28, 2005 |

Green and Purple
These lumpy green chairs are my latest venture into Carrara's vertex modeler. They're a little clunky but I learned a great deal while working on them.
Created June 19, 2005 |

Claire's Room
I put this together last night while Ian and I were discussing 3D rendering. I didn't create anything new for this piece. I was instead concerned with lighting.
Created September 7, 2005 |

Old Desk
Drew this today in Photoshop. It's typical of so many of the places I worked at in San Francisco -- those converted older buildings now serving as dot-com company head quarters.
Created September 13, 2005 |

White Chair
Drew this piece in Photoshop. I like the contrast of the white against the red.
Created September 21, 2005 |

Tribeca Gentlemen's Club
It's been a while since I've created any new furniture models. I put together these chairs while watching Smallville and CSI.
Created September 29, 2005 |

Siesta
This picture is inspired by a mural that's painted on the D street wall of Hayward Mexican restaurant. I created the aloe vera and chair in Carrara. The rest is Bryce (boolean operations, presets and terrains).
Created October 20, 2005 |

Ivy Covered Tree
There is a tree covered with ivy along its trunk near where I work. I wanted to see if I could reproduce it in Bryce. I created the trunk in Carrara. The ivy is a series of Bryce trees with invisible trunks.
Created November 19, 2005 |

A Plate of Cookies
Besides cupcakes, Sean also likes to bake chocolate chip cookies. I created these chips in Carrara's vertex editor and then added them to a terrain based cookie in Bryce.
Created December 5, 2005 |

The Owl and the Bear Relax After a Hard Day's Playing
Having been inspired by my success with creating the dog in the vertex editor, I decided to try to make Sean's favorite toy, a snowy owl, that he's had since he was a year and a half old.
Created January 23, 2006 |

Love Potion Number Nine
I heard the song recently on the radio and was inspired to make this piece. I modeled the potion in Carrara and did the texturing and rendering in Bryce.
Created February 4, 2006 |

Afternoon in the Park
The park in Castro Valley near Sean's school has some beautiful yellow benches. I decided to try to recreate them. I made the bench in Carrara, set up and rendered the image in Bryce and did some touch up work in Photoshop.
Created March 1, 2006 |

Captain Kreb's Sitting Room
The chair on the right hand side is my first test of the crab and star fish textile that I created in Illustrator. Apparently this salty sea dog is either a child or has children from the toys left on the seats.
Created March 28, 2006 |

Living Single
I created the olive oil dispenser last night. First I drew the sunflowers on the bottom in Illustrator and then I built the bottle in Carrara. I did the materials and rendering in Bryce. This kitchy scene reminded of the the sort of place I'd probably have if I were single.
Created April 5, 2006 |

After the Meeting
I created the chairs last night in Carrara and then rendered the scene in Bryce. The chairs need some further work.
Created April 21, 2006 |

Capp'y Rick Retires
David Cole made the swordfish and I thought it would be fun to hang it on the wall of a really over done interior. Maybe I was tired of doing landscapes!
Created June 2, 2006 |

The Neon Parrot
I needed to take a break from my personal challenge of using each of David Cole's models in a piece. The "current" one that I've opened is a round house but it doesnt' have the tracks and I'm just not sure I want to make a rail yard piece. I realized that emotionally I was missing the thrill of creating my own model and it had been too long since I had done an interior (a staple of mine).
Created July 9, 2006 |

A Spectrum of Chairs
The chair always looks good in bold colors and it struck me that I could do a color wheel with the chair. I put the bistro table in the center to offset all the bold colors. Likewise, I chose to render against a neutral background with the same lighting set up I've been using in my recent renders to put the empasis on the chairs instead of on either the background or the lighting.
Created August 12, 2006 |

Musical Chairs Melee
A number of comments on "Spectrum of Chairs" compared the piece to a game of musical chairs. Those comments inspired me to redo the scene showing the aftermath of a roudy game of musical chairs. I don't think there were any winners.
Created August 15, 2006 |

How're You Feeling, Couch Onion?
The subject header to a spam I received today inspired this render.
Created August 25, 2006 |

Open
While looking over my previous pages, I came across "Color Blind" and felt inspired to update it.
Created August 28-9, 2006 |

The Lap Pool
It's been a while since I've done a pool scene.
Created October 1, 2006 |

Clara
I was inspired to do so by the first page of The Gashlycrumb Tinies by Edward Gorey. Clara is the third child.
Created January 8-9, 2007 |

Ernest
Ernest is the fifth child in The Gashlycrumb Tinies. He choked on a peach. I created the peach in Carrara's vertex editor.
Created January 14, 2007 |

George
George is the seventh child in The Gashlycrumb Tinies. In the book he's actually suffocated by a rug but that seemed really difficult to illustrate in the style I've set up for this series. I put the tipped over chair to draw attention to the rug. The butterfly is just there to provide a little contrast to the blue of the carpet.
Created January 21, 2007 |

Leo
Leo is the next one in The Gashlycrumb Tinies. He ate tacks.
Created February 12, 2007 |

Susan
Susan is the next Gashlycrumb Tiny. She died of fits.
Created March 19, 2007 |

Due Vecchie Sedie
I rendered this piece inside my bus shelter model just to work with a tight interior space.
Created May 3, 2007 |

Sitting #1
"Sitting #1" which I expect will be the first in a series was inspired by the cover art for Sitting Practice by Caroline Anderson
Created March 1, 2008 |

Sitting #2
I toned down the shadows on the wall, adjusted the chair and added a second one to make things more interesting.
