Puss Reboots: Digital Art: Themes: Inspired By

Sometimes my art is inspired by other things: art, movies, etc.

Lost
While writing a tutorial on how to model in Bryce with primitives I chose to do a model of the Tin Woodsman from The Wizard of Oz.

Created January 6, 2001

Corwin... One Prince in Amber
This Photoshop collage is inspired by the Amber series by Roger Zelazny.

April 2001

Tales from the Darkside
This Halloween project was vaguely inspired by Tales from the Crypt.

October 2001

It's Not Fair
This image is obviously inspired by the last shot of that great Twilight Zone episode, "Time Enough at Last." I had trouble making the break in the glasses so I had to fake it in Photoshop.

March 2002

The Last Two Beans
The other end of the spectrum is this unlucky person who is snowed in with only two remaining baked beans for a meal until the snow melts.

The image was inspired in part by The Gold Rush (1925) staring Charlie Chaplin.

April 2002

You Are, Number 6
Inspired by The Prisoner.

April 2002

Room 101
Done for a challenge. I think the challenge was to depict one's greatest fear. I took inspiration from both The Twilight Zone and 1984 by
George Orwell.

May 2002

Antique Bike
I built this bike for a Carrara forum challenge. Also somewhat inspired by The Prisoner.

May 2002

The Bear with One Red Shoe
As silly as this sounds, this image was inspired in part by The Man with One Red Shoe (1985) starring Tom Hanks.

August 2001

Rocking Chair Winner
Vaguely inspired by D.H. Lawrence's story "Rocking Horse Winner."

September 2002

Evening Has Come to Pass
I made the models in Carrara but I rendered in Bryce. The title is inspired by a Moody Blues song.

October 2002

Flock of Sea Gulls
This beach render just needed some sea gulls. The title is from the 80s
rock band.

November 2002

B is for...
I drew this for a Janeecake challenge. Taken from the song, "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny yellow Polka Dot Bikini" by Timmy Mallett

January 2003

White Doors
A Carrara piece based on Wilhelm Hammeroi's painting of the same name.

February 2003

Last Year
Inspired by the film Last Year at Marienbad.

February 2003

The French Connection
This piece is one of my favorite Illustrator drawings.

March 2003

The Gateway
Romeo Slumbers
I drew Romeo with Project Dogwaffle. It is one of two (so far) drawings inspired by Romeo and Juliet which strikes me as odd. It's not remotely my favorite of the bard's plays. Obviously inspired by the bard's play.

May 2003

Fat Cat
Just playing around with carival type images. Now I've been told b some that yellow is a bad luck color and never used but I have seen it used so perhaps that taboo is only for
some areas.

May 2003

Moondance
Drawn with Painter. Inspired by the Van Morrison song.

June 2003

Orange Boy
I drew the kitten with Painter.
It's the feline answer to the
"Blue Boy" painting

September 2003

Living with Lemons
I was reading Driving Over Lemons at the time.

February 2004

The Best Laid Plans...
Having some fun with some randomly selected models of mine. Inspired by "To a Mouse," by Robert Burns:

"The best laid schemes o, mice an' men
Gang aft a-gley."

April 2004

If I Could Save Time in a Bottle...
I did this piece for another Bryce group challenge. One of the other members created the jars and lids. Taken from the Jim Croce song.

April 2004

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
I know... it's a Maya Angelou title but I was actually thinking of the Avengers episode where Emma ends up in a bird cage
("The Girl from Auntie").

April 2004

Where Have All the
Cowboys Gone?

Inspired by the song of the
same name.

April 2004

Be Seeing You Cowboy...
It reminds me of the lounge area on the Bebop (Cowboy Bebop). Well maybe after they've gotte a few extra thousand woolongs.

April 2004

Oil on Vango
Inspired by events in Iraq.

May 2004

A Time Without Clocks
I think I was reading The Man Who Folded Himself when I did this
piece in Bryce.

June 2004

Serenity
I had been watching our Firefly DVDs when I worked on this piece.

June 2004

Toad's Button
This Bryce piece (all done with Booleans) is inspired by the Arnold Lobel story "The Button" in one of the Frog and Toad books. These buttons are created based on the descriptons of the buttons Frog and Toad find when looking for Toad's
missing button.

July 2004

Danube
I was thinking of 2001: A Space Odyssey with this render. The space station is actually part of the MojoWorld planet. You can download a copy of Planet Nowandthen at the 3DCommune.

July 2004

Dial "C" for Chicken
A little poultry fun and inspired by Dial M for Murder.

August 2004

Prized Possession
Yup; I had just rewatched
A Christmas Story.

August 2004

The Infinite Chicken
A little homage to The Mouse and His Child but with chickens instead
of dogs.

August 2004

Metroid Dreams
I made this panoramic render after too much playing of Metroid.

September 2004

Radical Edward was Here
This render reminds me of the episode in which Radial Edward is introduced on Cowboy Bebop.

September 2004

The Red & The Black Inn
I started with a floor texture from the Photoshop tiling project. Of course in the final render, the floor texture doesn't show well, but it was the inspiration for this piece. Inspired in part by Twin Peaks.

April 8-12, 2005

Bleak House
I started this drawing with just a blank red book on a tartan blanket but the book needed a title. Since I'm currently reading Bleak House (and enjoying it thoroughly) I chose it as the title for my opened red book. The drawing is 100% Photoshop.

April 15-18, 2005

Lulu's
We were watching The Caveman's Valentine while I was working on this piece. I had put together yet another barstool. The Caveman's daughter is named Lulu.

April 30, 2005

Tragedy
This Photoshop drawing was inspired by a photograph of a recent performance of Romeo & Juliet.

May 2, 2005

Caps for Sale
One of Sean's favorite books at the moment is Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina. His enthusiasm for the story was my inspiration for this piece.

September 8, 2005

The Owl and the Pussy Cat
I created the cat with Carrara's vertex editor. I have to admit laziness with their boat. It's just a stretched soy sauce bowl that has been retextured.

Created February 1, 2006

Love Potion Number Nine
I heard the song recently on the radio and was inspired to make this piece. I modeled the potion in Carrara and did the texturing and rendering in Bryce.

February 4, 2006

Shelter from the Rain
I was inspired to create this piece from the rain scene in My Neighbor Totoro. The bus shelter that I built in Carrara has a lot more detail than is shown in this render. For the best results for the rain I had to add it in some Photoshop post production work.

May 2-3, 2006

Motif
Ian and I were watching Curse of the Black Pearl for about the hundreth time. The introduction of the Black Pearl inspired me to create this piece. I modeled the parasol in Carrara and did the rest in Bryce save for some foam adjustments in Photoshop.

Created May 7, 2006

Capp'y Rick Retires
David Cole made the swordfish and I thought it would be fun to hang it on the wall of a really over done interior. Maybe I was tired of doing landscapes!

June 2, 2006

Miami Fly-by
The buildings are all by David Cole and when they are lined up together they remind me of the fly-by establishing shots used in C.S.I. Miami. I'm not counting this piece as one of my successes but after two solid days of working on it, it doesn't seem likely to improve even with
further re-rendering.

June 4-5, 2006

Rear Window
I drew this piece in Photoshop. Windows fascinate me but I'm not a real life peeping tom.

June 21, 2006

Madam Butterball
Inspired by a song of the same title.
