What My Children Are Reading: Week 05: 06/25/09

What my kids are reading

Here it is Thursday again and time my favorite meme. We're on week five of "What Are My Children Reading" and this week with the exception of two books, they are all library books.

Sean:
Sean finished James and the Giant Peach and watched the film version made back in 1996. We've been having fun comparing and contrasting the two versions of the story and talking about themes and characterization. He is still debating if he wants to write a proper review for me to post on this blog.

He has since read Comets and Asteroids: Exploring Space (1998) by Amanda Davis. It's a brief introduction to the basics of the other things in our solar system besides the planets and the sun. It includes information about Shoemaker-Levy 9. After reading the book we spent a good ten or fifteen minutes online looking at photographs of the impact with Jupiter.

He is just starting two other books. One is a book of riddles and logic puzzles that happens to be one of Ian's favorite books. It's called What is the Name of This Book? and it's by Raymond M. Smullyan. The other book is Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. He has been very fond of owls since he was 18 months old. After he finishes the book we're going to rent the movie again for him to see. Hoot is from our collection; I read the book years ago and held onto the copy for Sean to enjoy.

Harriet:
Harriet is reading three library books: A Walk in the Rainforest by Kristin Joy Pratt, The Mouse, The Cat and Grandmother's Hat by Nancy Willard and The Summer Solstice by Ellen Jackson in honor of the solstice that just happened.

Kara

I love how you display your book covers each week! I'm going to check out "What is the Name of This Book" because it sounds just the sort of thing I'd like.
