The Canadian Book Challenge 3: 07/13/09

Vasilly at 1330v were tweeting back and forth about Canadian books because she's participating in the Canadian Challenge. I got so caught up in her enthusiasm that I have decided to join up too. The challenge runs from until Canada Day 2010.

The goal is to read 13 or more Canadian books, either by Canadians or set in Canada. I have no idea which 13 I will read so I'm not posting a tentative list.

Instead, I will list previous Canadian books I've read and then below I'll list my newly read books as I get through them.

Canadian books I've read and reviewed

These do not count towards this year's challenge.

  1. Barometer Rising by Hugh MacLennan
  2. Sea Gift by John Asby
  3. Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood
  4. Good Bones and Simple Murders by Margaret Atwood
  5. The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood
  6. The Golden Mean by Nick Bantock
  7. The Gryphon by Nick Bantock

  10. 200% of Nothing by A. K. Dewdney
  11. How to be a Canadian by Will and Ian Ferguson
  12. Rowing to Latitude by Jill Fredston (has some kayaking and camping in Canada)
  13. Burning Chrome by William Gibson
  14. Home from the Vinyl Cafe by Stuart McLean
  15. Jane of Lantern Hill by L. M. Montgomery
  16. Pat of Silver Bush by L. M. Montgomery
  17. Catholics by Brian Moore
  18. Cereus Blooms at Night by Shani Mootoo
  19. In the Skin of a Lion by Michael Ondaatje
  20. Days of Wonder by Geoff Ryman (short story)
  21. Jellaby Volume 1 by Kean Soo
  22. Emiko Superstar by Mariko Tamaki
  23. The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland

Thanks. I have two books set aside for the challenge. One is set in Saskatchewan and another set in Novia Scotia.

I haven't heard of those Montgomery books before. It would be nice to read some non-Anne books for the challenge-- not that there's anything wrong with Anne.

Both books are set on P.E.I. but give very different views of the island than the Anne books do.

Something by Margaret Atwood? She's the only Canadian author I can think of.

I've actually read a lot of Atwood's books (though haven't reviewed them on this blog). I might read another Atwood if I come across one I haven't read.
