Booking Through ThursdayBooking Through Thursday: Flapper or Not a Flapper? 01/14/10

Suggested by Prairie Progressive: Do you read the inside flaps that describe a book before or while reading it?

If flaps are available, I read them. I will read the flaps before I read the book, while I'm reading the book, after I've finished the book and while I'm reviewing the book. Sometimes the flaps give away the plot. Sometimes they mangle it. And yet, I am a compulsive flap reader.

In honor of the jacket flap, I've added video as a tongue-in-cheek response.

Glad to meet another flapper. Thanks for the video too! Charleston was featured in Dancing with the Stars last season. It's making a comeback. I'm ready to flap.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Back when I was in jr. high I wore my great aunt's flapper dress. My grandmother had inherited it from her. The aunt had also taught my grandmother how to dance the Charleston (my grandmother was too young to have been a flapper herself). So I spent a very fun Halloween dressed in a vintage costume dancing the Charleston. I doubt I could do it any more.

Yes, I read them always, too. The flaps & the summaries. Although I always thought they're the same thing, but I guess not always...

By the way, interesting video. A cow stuck in the mud :D :D :D

Thanks for stopping by. I think the flaps are just the bits folded onto the inside of the hardback covers. What they have on them depends on the book.

I'm a flapper too! If I'm reading an ebook then I need to check it out on goodreads. I like to get a sense of setting and style. And teasers to get me excited!

Teasers get me excited too. I practically live on GoodReads.

I am a huge fan of flaps. The quality of the blurbs on the flaps is often the determining factor of whether I will take the book home and try to read it or just leave it on the shelf.

I find I read the flaps more after I have the book than when I'm in the process of picking a book to read or buy. With library books I will often just snatch and grab at random, give it 50 pages (and many flap reads) before deciding if I want to continue reading it.
