What Are You Reading: March 7, 2011: 03/06/11

I've listed fourteen things as finished. More than half of those things are pictures books for my school project or short stories from The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. My currently reading still includes my text books.

Kraken, the massively huge novel by China Mièville is something I've been reading since Christmas. Finishing it meant reading about two hundred pages this week. It might have been as few as 150 pages. What I'm trying to say is, don't imagine me reading all of Kraken last week because I didn't. Not even close!

Now that Kraken is done, I'm reading The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan. Although it has as many pages as Kraken it has about half as many words on any given pages. It's a nice change from the dense book I was reading earlier.

When I finish with The Lost Hero I will probably switch to Blackout by Connie Willis. It's been sitting on my to be read pile at home for a while.

I prewrite my reviws so posting one a day isn't really that hard. Most of the things I read were very short.

Kraken was good but not my favorite by the author. I think he put a little too much work into the red herrings and not quite enough focus on the actual plot.

What did you think of Adventures of a Cat Whiskered Girl? We tried to read it for a library class, but it was fourth graders, and I could tell they were bored with it, even though they tried politely to listen - so we went on to How To Train Your Dragon.

I'm trying to picture how you were reading the book. Were you reading it aloud and having them listen? Or having them take turns at reading it aloud? Also, had they read the other two books, The Neddiad and The Yggyssy? It's a pretty out there book when read in order but I think it would be nearly complete nonsense read by itself.

I loved the book but I've read the other two and knew what I was in for when I started.

Congrats on finishing Kraken. I've never read anything by this author, but I almost read another book by him (stood with it in my hands in the library, but the copy was so old that I didn't bother).

I don't like it either when the text on the pages is very dense.

You should read China Mieville but don't start with Kraken. Try Un Lun Dun or Looking for Jake to get a taste of his writing style without making such a huge commitment!

The manga is short. I've already seen the anime for Fullmetal Alchemist so I'm familiar with the characters and basic plot arch. It's my fun reading when I need a break from homework.
