On My Wishlist: June 18, 2011: 06/17/11

On My WishlistI've finished my second week of summer school. So far the work load is very manageable. What kept me from reading this week though was a visit from my father-in-law. He was here to help us finish some well needed repairs to our home.

I finished Glimmering by Elizabeth Hand. I liked the set up and the way she imagined an ecologically based Y2K disaster but the plot involving the rock star and the young woman just didn't work for me at all.

I also finished an excellent French middle grade book called Secret Letters from 0 to 10 by Susie Morgenstern. If you have a chance to read it, by all means, do so. It's absolutely charming.

Last week's featured wish, Junonia ended up being offered to me via NetGalley. So I quickly read it a couple days ago. I think it has the honor of being on my wishlist for the shortest amount of time.

I'm currently working through The Otherworldlies by Jennifer Anne Kogler. I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying a YA vampire fantasy. Part of it is the setting, San Juan Capistrano. Part of it is the explanation of how things work (like vampirism). As it was done gradually and as part of the overall story, I'm completely willing to accept it.

Upcoming wishlist reads include (they are in my hands waiting to be read):

  • The Naked Mole-Rat Letters by Mary Amato
  • Arcadia Falls by Carol Goodman
  • These Granite Islands by Sarah Stonich
  • The Case of the Left-Handed Lady by Nancy Springer
  • Diving into the Wreck by Kristine Kathryn Rusch
  • The Writing Circle by Corinne Demas
  • 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson
  • Turnabout by Margaret Peterson Haddix
  • Keeping You a Secret by Julie Anne Peters
  • The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner's Dilemma by written by Trenton Lee Stewart
  • The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer
  • Eye of the Crow by Shane Peacock

The Featured Wish for June 18, 2010:

cover artSummer of the Dragon by Don Goodman (Recommended by GoodReads)

Summer of the Dragon provides the perspective of a hard-wired naturalist on the natural world and wild Florida in particular. It describes the author's lifetime of interactions with animals and plants...from the magical boyhood incident when two snake eggs hatched in his hand to the loss of his right arm to a horrifying attack by a giant alligator. Thrown into the mix are laugh-out-loud tales of student misadventures, colorful eccentrics, British soldiers cooking up a batch of psychotropic greens at Jamestown and a float trip down Florida's grand Ichetucknee River that became "the Donner Party afloat." If you don't know bastard toadflax from devil's dung, this book is for you.

I have been slowly entering my reading list data into GoodReads. One of the books I read about a decade ago was Summer of the Dragon by Elizabeth Peters. When I was searching for it, Don Goodman's book also popped up. I read the description was intrigued enough to add it to my wishlist.

Melissa (Books and things)

Interesting one you featured. Really sounds interesting in a creepy way (Donner Party afloat). I like! Enjoy! :)

Pussreboots

That's what I was thinking too. It's probably outside the edge of what I normally would read but I'm curious.
